Business and community leaders were treated to a presentation by Dr.
Gerald Nepom, the Director of the Benaroya Research Institute at
Virginia Mason. Dr. Nepom educated the audience about the array of
autoimmune diseases (AD's) themselves, the life cycle of diagnosis
and the probabilities of carrying or contracting these diseases.
We learned that there is some level of prediction to these diseases
and this should be looked at as prevention. Dr. Nepom also
showed examples and pictures of diseased cells, how they evolve and
how they effect healthy cells and the immune system itself.
Dr. Nepom spent some time describing what the research community at
the Benaroya Research Institute is doing in their current clinical
trials (that lead to FDA approved treatments for AD patients)
and how the advances in the world of genome sciences is helping them
get closer to finding break through cures.
They are basically dissecting diseased cells, finding out what is
wrong, then genetically reengineering them back into healthy cells.
While some cures are still years away, the research the group is
doing provides hope in the near future.
Lauren Muffett and Linda Jinneman, both have autoimmune disease,
spoke about living with Type 1 Diabetes and Fibromyalsia.
Listening to the experiences and the daily challenges of Linda &
Lauren was both inspirational and heart wrenching at the same time.
Truly courageous. They are using their personal crisis as a base to
reach out to others. They are helping so many people that have
no idea where where the benefit is coming from.
Lauren and Linda are true heroes.
